A West Deer man involved in a crash along Route 8 in Hampton in early December has been charged with causing the death of his passenger, Allegheny County Police said Tuesday.

Investigators said Carl John Keating, 32, was traveling north at a high rate of speed on Dec. 11 when he lost control of the 1992 Honda Civic he was driving, crossed into the southbound lanes and struck two vehicles.

A passenger in Keating’s car, Rebecca Koorsen, 28, of Glenshaw, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was reported injured in the wreck.

The Allegheny County Police Vehicle Reconstruction Unit investigated the crash.

Police said toxicology results from the county’s crime lab showed that Keating tested positive for cannabinoids.

Keating was charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, reckless endangerment and multiple vehicle code violations, according to court records.

An arrest warrant was obtained for Keating on Tuesday. He was taken into custody at Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh.

Keating is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing March 6.
