A Spring Open House will be held 5:15 to 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 at A.W. Beattie Career Center on Babcock Boulevard in McCandless.

A.W. Beattie’s 20 programs will be on display for all community members interested in learning more about them. Instructors for each program will be joined by current students and alumni who have volunteered to discuss their experiences at the career center, which range from earning college credits and scholarships to cooperative education and internships opportunities with local businesses and non-profits.

The career center’s newest program, Surgical Sciences – Operating Room Technology, also will be open to visitors. The program, which will be the seventh medical field at the career center, will launch in Fall 2020.

Every program will feature work by students, including the Robotics’ program’s newest 100-pound robot, the Automotive Collision Technology program’s World of Wheels championship peddle car and Cosmetology’s fashion show.

Culinary Arts and Pastry Arts students will provide a free buffet to visitors, and Advertising Design students secured a partnership with Brusters to sell ice cream to raise money for SkillsUSA state and national competitions.

A.W. Beattie serves more than 800 students from Avonworth, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel Area, Hampton Township, Northgate, North Allegheny, North Hills, Pine-Richland and Shaler Area.

Students who attend the career center spend half of their day at their home school for core classes and the other half at their A.W. Beattie program, which counts toward elective credits at each school district.
